From a physics perspective as soon as any joint breaks 90 degrees there will naturally be more stress placed on that joint. Stress should not be mistaken as something to avoid; instead, it should be something that we learn to control and regress to a pain-free level.
Ben Patrick has changed the fitness industry’s belief that passing your knee over your toes is harmful to the joint. Ben often cites a study at Berkeley that determined when your knee passes over your toe it experiences more stress; this is true. Where the researchers went wrong was concluding that this means you should avoid passing your knees over your toes. From a physics perspective as soon as any joint breaks 90 degrees there will naturally be more stress placed on that joint. Stress should not be mistaken as something to avoid; instead, it should be something that we learn to control and regress to a pain-free level. When walking backwards, walking down stairs, or deep squatting, your knee naturally goes over your toes. This is a movement pattern that constantly happens in nature, yet we avoid training it. This series encourages you to start walking backwards at least three times per week, and will show you five different regressions and progressions so that we can build strength in this movement pattern in a slow and measurable way. Each workout is quantifiable so that you know exactly how to track your intensity, volume, and level.
